No. The saving is made by evening out: heating is lowered where the flats are too warm and raised where they are cold. Total consumption falls, because the building is no longer heated according to its coldest flat.

Building automation is a system that measures the conditions in a building and, on that basis, controls heating, ventilation and domestic water. It replaces manual adjustments with continuous control based on measurement data, and it sends an alarm when something deviates from normal.

Renewal is worthwhile when spare parts are no longer available for the system, when alarms come repeatedly, when room temperatures vary between stairwells, or when heating costs are higher than in comparable buildings. Often a partial modernisation is enough: the old actuators and sensors are connected to a new controller and to remote monitoring without replacing the whole system.

A typical saving in heating energy is 10–30 % depending on the building's starting point and technology. The greatest benefit arises in buildings where heating has been controlled with a single heating curve without measurement in the individual flats, because overheating is largest in those.
